The recommended 3D printing filament for beginners

PLA (polylactide) is a non-toxic, bio-based industrial thermoplastic that is 100% biodegradable. It excels in being easy to print, durable, and relatively strong, making it one of the most user-friendly 3D printing filaments on the market. Therefore, it is the most recommended filament for people who are new to 3D printing. In addition, its ease of use makes it ideal for making 3D-printed parts for design, prototyping, and fixtures.

Reliable and Versatile Rigid Filament

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a thermoplastic 3D printing filament that features reliability, stiffness, strength, and impact resistance. It also features higher dimensional stability and chemical resistance. These properties make it useful for design, prototyping, functional testing, part assembly, and more. 3D-printed ABS parts are used for electronic housings, toys, and car body parts, among others.

Reliable and durable filament for engineering and end-use applications.

PC (polycarbonate) is a strong thermoplastic 3D printing filament that features excellent impact resistance, high rigidity, heat resistance, and flame retardancy. Therefore, PC filament can absorb impact, prevent deformation or cracking, and remain stable under high temperature and flame. Due to its heat resistance of 110 °C, PC is well suited for use in high-temperature environments, such as under the hood of a car. PC is also known for its impact resistance and is widely used for rigid part manufacturing, functional testing, finished part assembly, and fabrication.

Elastic and flexible rubber-type filament

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a kind of flexible and elastic 3D printing filament. Due to its rubber-like elasticity and durability, it is suitable for applications that require shock absorption and a soft surface. Examples of TPU 3D printed parts include pipes, gaskets, bushings, and vibration dampers.

User-friendly filament for general applications

PETG (polyethylene terephthalate, glycol modified) is an industrial thermoplastic 3D printing filament with excellent chemical resistance. PETG is strong, durable, heat resistant, and easy to print. 3D printed parts made with PETG can be used for prototyping, functional testing, part assembly, and more.

Ideal filament for outdoor applications

ASA (acrylic styrene acrylonitrile) is an opaque thermoplastic 3D printing filament with similar mechanical properties to ABS, but better UV and weather resistance. Therefore, it is often used for outdoor applications that need to maintain their color and properties.

Functional filament with a wide range of applications

PP (polypropylene) is a thermoplastic 3D printing filament that is also widely used in daily life. PP filament is durable, break-resistant, fatigue-resistant and semi-flexible. Parts printed from PP are well suited for applications where they will be twisted, bent or kinked. Because of its light weight and low friction, PP is also a contact-safe material for food, chemical and medical applications, including orthopedic applications.

Raise3D Premium PVA+ (polyvinyl alcohol) is a water-soluble 3D printing material with strong adhesion when combined with PLA, PETG, nylon, etc., making it an ideal support material for various types of filaments. Support structures printed with PVA+ dissolve when immersed in water, leaving a smooth surface on the 3D printed part.

Nylon or PA (polyamide) is a widely used engineering and industrial plastic, which is characterized by its excellent mechanical performance with good toughness, strength, and impact resistance. It is suitable for tools, functional and end-use parts. In addition, its low coefficient of friction is ideal for ergonomic tools and moving parts.

Glass Fiber Reinforced Filament (GF)

Glass fiber-reinforced 3D printing filament is ideal for engineering prototypes and end-use parts that require optimal mechanical and thermal resistance. The glass fiber reinforcement provides a significant improvement in stiffness, toughness, strength, and heat resistance.

Carbon fiber reinforced 3D printing filaments are composites consisting of short, chopped carbon fibers in a polymer matrix such as PLA, ABS, PETG, nylon, PP, etc. The carbon fibers reduce shrinkage and warpage during cooling and greatly improve the strength and stiffness of the finished 3D-printed part. Currently, Raise3D has launched the Raise3D Industrial PA12 CF filament for the carbon fiber reinforced filament series. Other carbon fiber-reinforced filaments will follow soon.

Hyper Speed ABS V2 filament is specifically designed to be used with the Hyper FFF™ solution from the Hyper Speed filament line. When printing at high speeds, the regular ABS filament is rapidly fed into the heat block, and the polymer has very little time to go from a solid to a molten state, which can cause nozzle clogging and poor bonding quality between layers.

Additionally, the regular ABS filament can be subject to warpage and delamination of the printed part during high-speed printing without a heated chamber. With optimized molecular weight and stiffness, Hyper Speed ABS V2 filament is capable of printing at the speed of up to 300 mm/s thanks to its faster melting and homogenous cooling, which results in a lower temperature gradient and lower inner stress of printed part.
