In September 2021, General Motors decided to equip some of its luxury SUV vehicles for 2022 with an additional spoiler closure to improve aerodynamics and increase fuel efficiency. However, this design change came late in the development process, creating challenges. GM needed to quickly manufacture 60,000 parts to avoid delaying delivery of 30,000 vehicles to dealers. GM began evaluating options that would enable the company to meet the delivery date while also replicating the design as closely as possible.
