The engineers at Ingersoll Rand recognized a key efficiency opportunity to move beyond their standard open impeller designs to a shrouded impeller design. But shrouded impellers are difficult to manufacture. With impellers rotating at 60,000 RPM, the design has very tight tolerances to meet. The blades further require excellent surface finishing to optimize aerodynamic performance.
